Why is my goldfish trying to bury itself?

I have four goldfish in a large tank. One of them keeps hiding behind ornaments for extended periods of time - I hadn't though anything of it. But this morning it had trapped itself in a castle in a desperate attempt to hide and when I released it it was covered in cuts, from the castle, and floated limply at the bottom. I've now isolated him.
