I really don't want to sound like a bigot, but I have to ask....?

Democracies have a set of checks and balances. The President can declare a law, but the Supreme Court can overturn it if it's in violation of the Constitution. Congress can enact laws but the President may veto them. Congress can override the President's veto, and so on. So if a law is felt to be unconstitutional, a higher court may review it and if they find it to be so, the law is declared illegal and is overturned.
