If prophet say the gates of paradise are under shadow of swords, you should remember it was said in the context of the Muslims having to defend themselves from people waging war against them, not the other way around. It is not about spreading the religion with violence -- which cannot be done, only false doctrines can be spread with violence, the religion cannot be spread with violence, Allah says so in Qur'an -- it is about being willing to die in defense of your community under attack from the evildoers. These are very different things and it is important you understand the difference because one is evildoer way and one is Islamic way.
