Free special characters software?

My husband is working as a lecturer teaching Algorithm ysis. We are now facing difficulties in producing notes and presentation slides as this requires us to use many symbols and special characters ( ie to write the equation that needs many mathematical notation). Can you guys recommend any free software that may ist us and convenient to use ? Seas of thanks.
